Here are the form photos from the 1950s onwards, although images from 2000 onwards are a work in progress. As you will see, we do have gaps, especially in the early years (1950s and 1960s) - can anyone help fill them? Equally, if you spot any errors, please do let us know in the comments, or submit alternative face recognition suggestions. You will see the facial recognition system is not perfect and there may be errors even if the names are printed on the front of the photo! We are working through them but please help us by filling in suggestions too, we will then autorise them behind the scenes.

400th anniversary book – bonus articles. With a fantastic collection of essays, written for the 400th anniversary book, we realised we were going to be restricted for space and unable to include all the articles in the hard copy of the book. And of those we could include, many had to be reduced. Fortunately, we have unlimited space on Latymer’s Social Archive and are working towards including all commissioned articles in their entirety – they’re a real treat for anyone connected to Latymer. We hope you enjoy reading more of your school’s history in these fantastic articles.

The Latymerian magazines are probably the Latymer Foundation's best record of school life. We are delighted to have the full collection, from 1897, digitised and the ones from 1940 are shared here. The earlier issues will be up in the next few weeks. In the meantime, can you find the issues from your school years?

This folder still has a long way to go and gaps to fill, it’s very much a work in progress. But it is an important one, as joining one of the many exciting clubs or societies on offer has often been the best way for Latymerians to discover new experiences. These could be anything from auditioning for a music group, trying out for a sports team, working backstage (or indeed performing in one of the fantastic plays produced each term) or taking a trip abroad. What did you get involved with whilst at the school?

Today Latymer Upper School has a reputation for staging outstanding theatre productions with alumni including Sir Michael Boyd, Alan Rickman, Mel Smith, Hugh Grant, Imogen Poots, Ophelia Lovibond and Lily Cole excelling in this field. However, in the years after the First World War Latymer offered little in the way of cultural activity outside the classroom. There was a choir and an active debating society, but very little drama. In 1922 Mr F.J. Skinner, then just appointed as Head of English by the second Headmaster, Rev. Dr Dale, set up ‘The Gild’ to be Latymer’s ‘flagship’ cultural and dramatic society and it flourished for many decades. By the late 70s, girls from Godolphin were regularly taking part in Gild productions. The Gild had all the equipment required to produce and perform plays, including for the time a ‘state of the art’ lighting and sound rig and control board. At the time there were steel girders fixed across the Hall just below the windows to which the lights were fixed and the corridor end of the Hall was turned into a stage. The two annual events in the Gild’s life were the ‘Alle Fooles Morowspeche’- as All Fools’ Day is of course April 1st, this took place in June - and the ‘Jantaculum’, an annual topical revue, performed at Christmas.

This folder has only just started, we have a long way to go! We do have a lot of material to work through in the Archives already but if you have anything to add it will be most welcome, get uploading. Today, sport plays a key part in both the curricular and co-curricular life of our Latymer students, who enjoy both team sports and individual pursuits. The major sports offered today are cricket, football, hockey, netball, rowing and rugby which aim to embrace the co-educational nature of the school. When the school opened in 1895 there would have been a much more limited offering. In December 1897, The Latymerian magazine only reported on football, swimming and chess. By 1920, boxing, cross-country running, athletics, shooting and cricket also featured. The school gained its own gym in 1901 and a rifle range followed in 1907. Now, games afternoons, matches and training generally take place at the school’s Wood Lane playing fields which have been used by the school since 1908. Before that, matches and sports days were held at a variety of local places from Wormholt Park to Stamford Bridge. Swimming was originally at a pool in Hammersmith. This quickly became unsuitable and boys used the new pool on Lime Grove in Shepherds Bush from 1908. The school finally got its own on-site pool in 1976. Boating has also been a key part of the Latymer story, although it had a slow start. Rowing was abandoned in 1904, for several years, due to lack of interest. The current Latymer Boat House opened in 1964, overlooks the Thames and now houses over 50 boats.

Despite proximity to the river, rowing has not always been popular at Latymer - in 1904 it was stopped completely due to lack of interest. At that point it had very much been considered to be 'the sport of gentlemen' and only a summer activity anyway. Jump to today, and it is one of the most popular sports that the school offers. We now have a history of great boating pedigree with Olympic performances from both staff and alumni. Rowing at Latymer is here to stay. As ever, please help us date and name people and events if you can fill in any of our information gaps.

On Wednesday, March 18th, 1964 shortly after three o’clock, the opening ceremony of Latymer’s new boathouse took place. The proceedings were opened by Mr. H. H. G. Bennett, Chairman of the Governors, who, introduced the guest of honour, H. R. N. Rickett, President of the Henley Regatta Committee. He began by commending rowing to all boys seeking an active and enjoyable pastime who are prepared to display the necessary discipline, dedication and endurance. Turning to Latymer’s own contribution he mentioned the success of our past crews and considered that the new boathouse, in his opinion a great achievement, would bring us “countless hopes and many successes”. How right he was and over 60 years later and rowing has gone from strength to strength at the school. It was certainly come a long way since 1904 when rowing was abandoned due to lack of interest!
